Creator expected every person to serve Him and the Native Americans understood how this was done.  To be an effective servent among the people and other created objects required a concentrated effort to rid oneself of those things about a person that would tend to frustrate the will of the One above. Selfishness, willfullness, hate, anger & doubt had to be put aside.  The Natives evolved a program of practices that removed the barriers and "hollowed then out' until they were like a smooth tube through which Creator could act with maxium effectivemess.  They understood the "way" so well to give the credit for the blessings to the proper source rather than to the instrument.  if a person deserved praise at all, it was for their willingness and sacrificial attemt to be used rather than for what resulted.  And, if a failure occured, the blame was always attributed to the human instrument, for it was obviously due to some error on their part;
